Curricular Structure
The program is structured in three areas of knowledge, namely: Social and Human Sciences in Health (SHSH), Epidemiology (PPE) and Policy, Planning and Health Management (PPHM). Every year, about 20 disciplines are offered and equally distributed among the three areas of knowledge. In addition to the mandatory discipline, "Construction of the Collective Health field," which must be attended by all students from the three areas, each area requires one or two mandatory disciplines to its master and doctoral students. Thus, in the area of Epidemiology, "Epidemiology" and "Basic Topics in Biostatistics" are mandatory disciplines, in the area of SHSH, "Human and Social Sciences in Health" is the mandatory discipline, and in the area of PPHM, "Theory of Organization and Management in Health."
Each credit unit at UNIFESP is equivalent to 15 hours of class. To complete the master’s degree, PPGSC students must complete 48 credit units in disciplines, and to complete the doctorate, 72 credit units are necessary, which is equivalent to 720–hour courses for the master's degree and 1080–hour for the doctorate.
It is also noteworthy the optional disciplines are closely related to the lines of research of the program and are taken with the advisor’s indication. Eighty percent of the credit must be obtained with disciplines. The advisor can assign 20% of the credit to research activities or participation in events in the area. Thirty percent of the credit from the courses can be obtained outside UNIFESP, as long as approved by the advisor.
