EPE 480x260

The Federal University of São Paulo’s stricto sensu Graduate Course at the Paulista School of Nursing (EPE/Unifesp) traces back to 1978. Restructured in 2008, the current Nursing Graduate Program offers training at the master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

The Program aims to train masters, doctorates and post-doctorates capable of expanding, consolidating and disseminating the science of Nursing, promoting transformative practices and spreading teaching and research, besides contributing individually and collectively in social, political and ethical research issues so as to improve the population’s quality of care and health.

MISSION: To be a center of excellence in the training of researchers, leaders and professionals capable of promoting the advancement of Nursing and Health science, emphasizing a multidimensional approach to people and groups in their different manifestations.

VALUES: The Graduate Program in Nursing’s most fundamental tenet is that the human being has prerogatives and rights that must be respected, since the right to life and health is paramount to one’s self-determination. This stems from the fact that Nursing focuses on supporting health care needs from an individual and collective perspective, through the integration of knowledge bases such as the scientific, the personal/interpretative, the critical, the ethical, the aesthetic and the socio-political. Such an integration orients the production of knowledge in Nursing, contributing to an innovative and transformative professional practice.

OBJECTIVES: To train masters, doctorates and post-doctorates to be able to unify knowledge bases when it comes to research, teaching and extension in Nursing and Health Sciences; employ different philosophical-theoretical and methodological perspectives in order to build, expand, consolidate and disseminate the Sciences of Nursing and Health, contributing individually and collectively to the improvement of the population’s quality of care and health; share their ideas and participate in projects beyond institutional limits.

Our History

The stricto sensu Graduate Course of the Paulista School of Nursing at the Federal University of São Paulo (EPE/Unifesp) dates back to 1978. Its three-decade-long contribution to the training of masters, doctorates and post-doctorates has aggregated substantial value, in the national and international scenario, to the production of knowledge in the field of Nursing and Health Sciences. The Program traces its roots to the Master’s Course in Pediatric Nursing, created in 1978, followed by Obstetric Nursing in 1980 and Adult Health Nursing in 1989.

The Doctoral Course in Maternal-Child Nursing was inaugurated in 1986. A major change took place in 1996 when the three master’s courses were unified, and the Doctorate in Maternal-Child Nursing became a Doctorate in Nursing under the umbrella of a single Graduate Program. According to research analyses, this change led to positive results. In 2002, a new change occurred, this time with the merging of the different areas of concentration into a single one: Fundamentals and Nursing Practices in the Health-Disease Process. In 2005, Unifesp determined that all stricto sensu Graduate Programs had to be concerned with bringing in other professionals, prompting the unification of the titles of master and doctorate in science. In 2008, a new restructuring culminated in the course’s current configuration.
