FAQs

  • How can I apply for the Graduate Program?

First, you have to find a supervisor (see the faculty tab on the website) and prepare a Research Master's or Ph.D. proposal. Join the supervisor acceptance letter, research proposal, and other documents requested by the Graduate Office, which the supervisor must forward to the Graduate Board for analysis.

  • Who can apply for admission to the Program?

The candidates must hold a B.S. or B.A. degree. The candidates should have some knowledge in the research areas related to the Program.

  • How can I get a fellowship?

The Program grants fellowships from CAPES (Brazilian Agency for Graduate Studies), publishing a Public Notice for a wide competition twice a year. The fellowships will be granted based on the ranking and the available fellowships per semester (variable). Candidates must apply, following the rules of the Notice, and take a test on General Chemistry.

Students (with their supervisors) can apply directly for fellowships to other public or private agencies, such as FAPESP or CNPq.

  • What information can you give me about the Master and Ph.D. programs?

The graduate student must obtain the minimum credits requested for Master's (25) or Ph.D. (40) and have to develop a research project (experimental or theoretical). The recommendation is at least 40 hours of dedication to the Master’s and Ph.D. per week. In the end, the student must defend a Master's thesis or Doctor's dissertation on the results obtained and evaluated by a specialized Committee.

  • I have a degree in Humanities (law, social sciences, management, and others). Can I apply?

Yes, you can. However, we emphasize that the graduate student must prepare a research project in the area of Chemistry or related disciplines.

  • How do I find a supervisor?

See the Faculty tab on the website. Look for their research area, and contact the one you have the interest to work with.

  • How about the courses of the Program?

Each course has a specific schedule and duration. They are offered regularly but not necessarily every semester. Consult the Program's website at the beginning of each semester to find out which courses will be offered. The mandatory courses that the students must take include syllabuses related to General Chemistry, Scientific Writing, Seminars, and Fundamentals of Sustainability Science.   To complete the credits, the student must take one (master) or two (Ph.D.) of the advanced courses in Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry, plus complimentary courses and activities related to his/her research project.

  • Do I have to take an English Language Proficiency Test?

Yes, you have. To take the qualifying examination in the middle of your Master's or Ph.D. period, you must first pass the  English Language Proficiency Test. See on the website the Language schools in the Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo that offer the test and the minimum score demanded by the Program.  Native speakers of English are exempted from taking this test.

  • What is the Qualifying Examination?

It is a report that the student must present, after 18 (Master’s) or 30 (Ph.D.) months, about his/her research project developed so far to a Committee formed by Ph. D. researchers specialized in your project's area, who will ask questions about it. First, the student must obtain a minimum number of credits to pass the English Language Proficiency Test and have a reasonable number of results obtained from his/her research project.

The Qualifying Examination determines the students' proficiency in their area of research and their ability to understand and critically analyze scientific papers in their area of research. The student has to present the main results in a 30-minute presentation and after that respond to the questions asked by the Committee based on his/her report and presentation.

  • What is the Teaching Assistant Activities (PAD) Program?

The Teaching Assistant Activities (PAD) Program aims to develop teaching skills in higher education, enabling the exposure of graduate students to activities in selected undergraduate courses. It is mandatory for Ph.D. students who hold a CAPES fellowship and optional for other students.

  • How should I proceed to enroll as a special student?

Non-enrolled students must take the courses as "special students." After enrollment in the Graduate Program, the student can request the acquirement of the credits related to these courses.

  • Can an international student apply to the Program?

The candidate must hold a B.S. /B.A. degree from an accredited institution. Courses are generally in Portuguese, but in the case of non-Portuguese speaker students, the Graduate Committee can arrange so that selected courses be done in English. Tests for fellowships can be applied in English upon request.

And about Post-Doc positions?

Each supervisor can offer post-doc positions as much as he/she can. Please contact one of the supervisors (faculty tab) for more information.
